Learn Spanish at the movies

The growth in the worldwide population of Spanish speakers has brought about an increasing awareness of and interest in Spanish culture which in turn has sparked a huge interest in learning the Spanish language. There are countless numbers of books, cds and video tutorials for the learner to choose from ranging in price from bargain-basement to break the bank figures.

Learning Spanish as a second language is never the easiest thing to do and it seems that it becomes more difficult the older you get (this may be down to adult responsibilities making it more difficult to find time to study rather than a retention problem). And the frustration is often increased when after studying for months on end you try out your new language with a native Spanish speaker and find you do not understand anything they say and, perhaps worse still, they have difficulty in understanding you.

The problem is that even the best designed courses by definition have to be structured and follow a pattern of introducing basic vocabulary and the dreaded grammar and then building on these foundation blocks. The end result is that the finished product is often going to be somewhat stilted and predictable. The reality is that, as with any language, the vast majority of Spanish speakers do not speak in a precise, measured fashion and do not expect to hear other people speaking in that manner.

To learn Spanish properly, you must be exposed to it in a natural fashion and one of the better ways to get this exposure today is by learning Spanish from watching movies. This works brilliantly on so many levels. Virtually every modern DVD will have the option to select the spoken language and also select the sub-title language.

So to build vocabulary select one of your favorite movies and watch it with your finger on the pause button while the Spanish subtitles are displayed. You will be learning up-to-date Spanish and loads of everyday terms and usages that the books never cover. Then watch the movie with spoken Spanish and English subtitles allowing you to practice your dialogue. Finally watch with language and subtitles in Spanish. You will be amazed at how quickly you will pick up phrases and ideas without having to worry about grammar – just the way you learned your first language.

There is no doubt that learning Spanish by watching Spanish movies is an enjoyable and stimulating way to learn the language, but you do need to be a little cautious. The quality of subtitles can vary a lot. Sometimes the subtitles do not reflect exactly what is being spoken and as such may misguide you on the exact meaning of words. This is particularly true when there are long passages of dialogue spoken rapidly.

If you are listening to the Spanish sound on a movie that was recorded in English, the dubbing director can play fast and loose with the script to make the sound match the lip-movements.  So you should expand your horizons and get movies that were recorded in Spanish. There will be no dubbing distortion and you may just step into a wonderful movie world you never knew existed. Buen suerte!!
