Spanish Cinema and Penelope Cruz

The art of motion picture making within the nation of Spain by Spanish filmmakers is known as the ”Spanish Cinema” . Spanish cinema in recent years has achieved a high level of recognition due to its creative and technical excellence. Luis Bunuel the great filmmaker was the first to receive universal recognition in the history of Spanish Cinema. However today many actors like Fernando Ray and Penelope Cruz have achieved significant recognition outside Spain.

 

Penelope Cruz Sanchez better known as Penelope Cruz  is a leading Spanish actress. Born on April 20 1974 , Penelope was signed by an agent when she was merely fifteen and she made her acting debut at the age of sixteen on television and her feature film debut later with Jamon in 1992 , to critical acclaim.

 

Initially however Cruz had no ambition of becoming an actress and focused on dancing, having studied classical ballet for nine years at the Spainish National Conservatory. She became a fan of movies when she was ten . She began doing casting calls for an agent and was rejected many times . However finally in 1989 , fifteen year old Cruz made her debut in a music video for a Spanish Pop group . Between 1990 and 1997 she had hosted a Spanish Television channel talk show , acted in an episode of an erotic French series Series Rose where she appeared totally naked , made her feature film debut in Jamon where she portrayed a young woman expecting to  deliver her first baby with a guy whose mother does not approve of her relationship and attempts to sabotage it.

 

According to  the People Magazine, Cruz became a major sex symbol after appearing topless in the film . The film received favorable reviews and Cruz for her performance was nominated  for a Spanish Actors Union Newcomer Award and a Goya Award for the best actress. In the following years Cruz bagged roles in a number of films like the Spanish comedy Love can Seriously Damage your Health , Spanish Sci-fi drama Open Your Eyes, Don juan , The Girl of your Dreams and many more .

 

The Year 2001 proved to be a turning point when Cruz starred in the films Blow and Vanilla Star. Her performance was very well received by critics with BBC film critics complementing  her performance. Another turning point in her career was in 2006 when she became the spokes model for the French beauty Company L’Oreal to promote beauty products such as hair dye and mascara. She received $2 million a year for her work for the company. In 2010 she was a guest editor for the French Vogue Magazine. Apart from being a successful actress, Cruz also believes in being charitable, donating both money and time to charity. She had donated her salary from her first Hollywood movie to Mother Teresa’s Mission. Cruz married Javier Bardem in early July 2010 after dating him for three years and later gave birth to her first son Leo in 2011.

Today more than 20 percent of the box office takings are generated by domestic films in Spain encouraging the Spanish Government to implement various measures  to support local film productions .
