More and more Spanish and Latin American actors are starting to make their very own names in the industry today. If you want to get to know them, here are a few of the most popular Latin American actors that have made it big in Hollywood.

Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas was one of the very first actors to ever make it big in the silver screen. He was born in Malaga, Spain in 1960. After a leg injury that thwarted his dreams of ever becoming a professional soccer player, he concentrated his attention to theater instead. He devoted 5 years to studying in the prestigious National Theater of Spain. His acting talents eventually caught the eye of director Pedro Almodovar in 1982. Their collaborations have produced a number of great films such as the Labyrinth of Passion in 1986, Law of Desire in 1987 and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! in 1990.

He made first ever debut in a Hollywood film in 1992 playing as a musician in the movie, Mambo Kings. During this time, Banderas did not speak a word of English and had to learn his lines phonetically. Today, he has an impressive list of films under his name and is considered to be one of the most iconic Spanish actors ever to set foot in Hollywood.

Benicio del Torro

Benicio del Torro has always dreamed of becoming an actor since he was young. His family however, wanted him to become a lawyer and discouraged him from ever getting into the film industry. Intent of fulfilling his dreams, Benicio won his very first role as “Duke the Dog-Faced Boy” in the film Big Top Pee Wee. Following this, the actor supported himself with a number of small movie stints for a few years. In 1995, Benicio del Torro rose into popularity for his performance in the crime drama, The Usual Suspects. The role won him the Best Supporting Actor title in the Independent Spirit Awards.

Over the years, he has written and produced films that were also well received on the silver screen. In 2008, he became the first ever Latin actor to receive the Cannes Film Festival’s the Best Actor Award for his role as Che Guevara in a historical 2-part epic, entitled The Argentine and Guerilla.

Javier Bardem

Javier Bardem was born in March 1969 in the Spanish Canary Islands. He made his very first film debut at the young age of 11, working together with his actress mother, Pilar Bardem. The actor already had an impressive list of local films under his name before he ventured out to Hollywood. Javier Bardem was the first ever Latin actor to receive an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the exiled Cuban poet, Reinaldo Arenas. The movie required him to speak English with a Cuban accent which was a huge feat for the Spanish actor. His years of hard work finally paid off as he took home the Oscars for playing an assassin in the 2006 film, No Country for Old Men.
